PRESS RELEASE

  • Pioneering four-year project to monitor in real time 14 large-scale bridges, totaling 52 km, situated in seismic area
  • Contract provides for the procurement, installation and commissioning of an advanced Real Time Structural Monitoring System (RTSMS)
  • Bridges are part of the New Double-Track High-Speed Railway Line Tithorea – Lianokladi – Domokos in Central Greece

Paris, May 7, 2019 – OSMOS Group, a specialist in the field of infrastructure monitoring and a subsidiary of EREN Groupe, is pleased to announce the signature of a contract between its Greek subsidiary OSMOS Hellas SA and ERGOSE SA, a subsidiary of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), for the provision of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) services for 14 large-scale bridges located in Central Greece.

As part of ERGOSE SA’s ambition to modernize OSE’s railway network, OSMOS Group has been chosen to provide monitoring services for 14 bridges forming part of the New Double-Track High-Speed Railway Line Tithorea – Lianokladi – Domokos.

Infrastructures such as bridges are exposed to a significant number of challenges which may be linked to operating conditions, traffic or the environment. Monitoring those structures closely is indispensable to ensure optimal operation and the highest safety standards.

Built on the most mountainous and difficult-to-access part of the Greek railway network, the 14 bridges are particularly exposed to increased levels of seismic activity. They have therefore been constructed with seismic insulation, incorporating the latest type of anti-seismic protection devices such as anti-seismic shock absorbers and hydraulic viscosity fluid dampers.

A pioneering project to provide critical data to ensure optimal operating conditions and the highest safety standards

The contract includes the procurement, installation and commissioning of an advanced Real Time Structural Monitoring System (RTSMS) for the bridges, over an initial period of four years.

OSMOS’ services have multiple purposes: to monitor the functioning of the bridges' seismic protection devices, to detect extraordinary events and related responses, and to assess the bridges’ overall condition and possible structural deterioration over time.

By leveraging innovative technologies and sophisticated tools, this comprehensive monitoring system will enable OSMOS to relay critical data regarding the structural behaviour of the bridges under operating conditions to ERGOSE SA in real time.

To this end, different types of connected sensors will be installed on critical parts of the bridges and will record live data linked to deformation, relative displacement, acceleration, temperature and wind velocity. The volume and type of data collected and processed by ΟSMOS, ERGOSE SA and specialist contractors demonstrate the scientific sophistication of the project.

This internationally pioneering project will permanently monitor large-scale, seismically-insulated railway bridges of a total length of 52 km for the first time, evaluating the transmission of seismic waves and their impact on the structured railway environment.

About OSMOS Group

OSMOS Group is a subsidiary of EREN Groupe, the first group dedicated to the economy of natural resources founded in 2012 by Pâris Mouratoglou and David Corchia. Established in 2006, OSMOS is a recognized specialist in the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). It offers a wide range of solutions in monitoring structural assets of the building, infrastructure and industrial sectors.

OSMOS Hellas SA is a subsidiary of OSMOS Group, founded in 2014 in Greece and managed by its CEO, Cosmas Fessas. The company is active in Greece, neighboring countries and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

OSMOS designs and manufactures innovative sensor systems based on a unique optical-fiber technology, the Optical Strand®. This technology allows the monitoring, detection and measurement of deformations and potential weaknesses of various types of buildings, infrastructures, and industrial equipment. OSMOS also develops with engineers, mathematicians and data scientists its proprietary algorithms for data analysis and interpretation. OSMOS’ suite of software, SAFE Works®, allows its customers and engineers to visualize, analyze and interpret the deformations of infrastructures. OSMOS’ latest SAFE Traffic® software development combined with the Optical Strands® sensors provide both structural health monitoring of bridges and overpasses and weigh-in-motion (WIM).

OSMOS’ SHM solutions have already been implemented with customers of the public and private sectors in more than 20 countries, including: France, Greece, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, Canada, USA, Brazil, Chile, Turkey, Russia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
